Authentic Birth Documentation
One of the things I love the most about looking at images that are 10, 20 years old, is that I can see the true colors of the people. I can see the authenticity of each image and can put my self exactly at those locations, time and moments through the images. I love that I can see my mom and siblings exactly how they were at those moments.
Professional photography puts a lot of focus on the editing part, it really can take a lot of time and dedication to edit. That said, when I edit my clients images, I want them to see images that remind them of how they look (especially when it comes to the colors of the images). I put a lot of attention specifically on skin color, I want you to look at the image and see yourself not another shade of yourself ;).
I’ll explain why I take this approach…
Trends and styles are usually things that have a short life. I remember when I used to dress is everything brown. Then I had a moment that I wanted to dress in blacks. All trends are the same way, and that doesn’t exclude images… remember when everything was Sepia Color? I do!!! And you know what, I go back now to those images and I cringe lol. I remember when selective coloring was a thing, you know, when the images was black and white and then there was a rose that was red, yup! That was a trend! Now, we might look at those and be, whoa, that’s old school! haha.
When I work on my images, I really want these to be timeless images! I want you to be able to see and experience your images, not only now, but 10, 20, 50 years from now. I want your children to be able to experience them like they are seeing the real moment. I want people to see the true colors, not my interpretation of the colors. I want them to feel, I want them to experience and I want the images to cause these emotions because it will make them feel real.
I apply this not only to my birth stories but to most of my sessions, but I feel that for Birth specifically, you need to see the true colors in order to see the real story behind a birth. I feel this completes a true authentic birth experience and speaks about true documentary photography, which is what birth photography is all about. Birth Photography might be seen as a “trend” but it shouldn’t be, this is a priceless and unique time for each birthing person and should be treated as such.
I am including a few before and afters of birth stories I’ve had the honor to document in Boston, as well as Greater Boston, Metro West and Central Mass!
Hope you all enjoy!
